Yoga Philosophy | Part I

Textbook: Yogasūtra of Patañjali

Duration: 15 Classes

a. 5 Weeks – 3 Classes per Week

Length: 1 hour/class

Yoga Philosophy: Part I dives deep into the contents of the Yogasūtra. While exploring the ancient language of Sanskrit, we will derive essential teachings from the sūtras and classical commentators who have written throughout the centuries.

Objective: To acquire a traditional understanding of Yoga Philosophy through the eyes of Patañjali and classical commentators from 500 B.C.E. and onwards. To acquire a solid grasp of Yoga terminology in the original language of Sanskrit.

Covered Topics: Definition of Yoga, Yoga Metaphysics (Soul, Matter), The Mind (Citta), Five Fluctuations of the Mind (Vṛttis), Three Sources of Knowledge (Pramāṇas), Meditative Concentration (Samādhi), Distractions of the Mind (Vikṣepa), Purpose of AUM, Īśvara (God), etc.

After each class, students will have weekly assignments that will facilitate discussions for the following classes. At the end of the week, a day will be reserved for review of weekly material.

Requirements: Completions of weekly assignments; Openness to Sanskrit vocabulary and pronunciation; Consistent Participation.

Yoga Philosophy | Part II

Textbook: Yogasūtra of Patañjali

After each class, students will have weekly assignments that will facilitate discussions for the following classes. At the end of the week, a day will be reserved for review of weekly material.

Introductory Sanskrit

Duration: 6 Classes

a. 3 Weeks – 2 Classes per Week

b. 6 Weeks- 1 Class per Week

Length: 1 hour/class

Objective: To introduce the Sanskrit language and provide students with independent reading, writing and pronunciation abilities. To offer students an opportunity to develop their Sanskrit vocabulary (karma, dharma, ātman, manas, buddhi, etc.).

Covered Topics: Devanāgarī Script, Characters (Vowels, Consonants, Semivowels, Sibilants, Conjunct Consonants), Vocabulary, etc.

After each class, students will have weekly assignments that will facilitate discussions for the following classes. At the end of the week, a day, typically Friday, will be reserved for review of weekly material.

Prerequisites: None

Requirements: Completions of weekly assignments; Openness to Sanskrit vocabulary and pronunciation; Consistent Participation.

Course Fee: $300

Introductory Sanskrit-I serves as a prerequisite for the Sanskrit Grammar series.

Sanskrit Grammar | Part I

Duration: 8 Classes

a. 4 Weeks – 2 Classes per Week

b. 8 Weeks – 1 Class per Week

Length: 1 hour/class

Objective: To introduce the fundamentals of Sanskrit grammar and provide students with independent reading, writing and pronunciation abilities.

Covered Topics: Parts of Speech, Sandhi, Word Anatomy, Noun Declensions, Verb Conjugations, Participles, Word Order, Special Rules, etc.

After each class, students will have weekly assignments that will facilitate discussions for the following classes. At the end of the week, a day will be reserved for review of weekly material.

Prerequisites: Introductory Sanskrit

Requirements: Completions of weekly assignments; Openness to Sanskrit vocabulary and pronunciation; Consistent Participation.

Yoga Philosophy: Part I

Duration: 1 Class

Objective: In a short 90 minute class, students will be introduced to the structure, contents and language of the Yogasūtra of Patañjali. Students will touch upon the basic concepts mentioned in the first chapter.
